Nov.2011
Dear Friends,
Now that we have had a few weeks to recover from the Children's Corner Fall
Sewing School, we are ready to begin preparing for the upcoming February Sewing
School! The dates for the school are February 23, 24, and 25. The Pre-Day class
is February 22. Sonya and I are very excited to feature Debbie Glenn as our
guest teacher. She will be teaching a pre-day class as well as all three days of
the sewing school.
Debbie is a designer, author and teacher who specialize in fine machine and
heirloom sewing, recreating handwork by machine, plus appliqué and smocking.
Most of her machine classes focus on new techniques. Students gain proficiency
by making samples prior to beginning work on the class projects.
These classes will be limited to twenty students so be sure to sign up early.
The price for the 3 day school is $295. This price includes lunch each day.
There will be an additional kit fee for each class. A non-refundable deposit of
$100 is due at registration. The balance of $195 is due on January 23, 2012. The
pre-day is class $85 with an additional kit fee. A non-refundable deposit of $25
is due at registration with the balance due January 23, 2012.
As you will see in the attached photos, these projects are garments that will be
priceless treasures. Don't miss this chance to gain a wealth of knowledge from
such an accomplished instructor!
Here is to a safe and happy holiday season.
God bless,
Sonya and Susan

PRE-DAY CLASS ~ WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22
Bambury Cross Shadow Appliqué Sundress
SKILL LEVEL: ALL
SIZE: 12, 18 & 24 months
Moms and toddlers alike will fall in love with the pastel rocking horse on this
precious pique sundress trimmed with blue whip stitch piping. Bambury Cross
showcases a new shadow appliqué technique which eliminates the need to trim away
excess underlying colored fabric and the possibility of accidentally cutting the
surface fabric after stitching is finished. Straight stitch outlining,
especially when thread matches the fabric shadows, replicates hand shadow
embroidery more closely than the pin or zigzag stitch used in the traditional
method. Students learn how to prepare pre-trimmed cut outs, sandwich fused cut
outs in between a sheer lawn top and base fabric block, outline the rocking
horse motif using a straight stitch, and add hand details. Once the tiny insert
is embellished, Debbie shares her secrets for applying perfect piping which
makes the rest of the garment construction a breeze.
THURSDAY & FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23 & 24
Enchanted Smocked Garden
SKILL LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE - Student should be comfortable
with basic smocking (cable & wave) and embroidery stitches (stem, lazy daisy,
French knot & bullions)
SIZE: 2 - 4
Many of us dream of magical gardens where the unexpected is common place, but
leave it to Debbie Glenn to create one. Surprises abound in this whisper soft
smocked confection... from the woven ribbon that replaces traditional piping at
the yoke and multicolor dew drops that embellish the bias bands, to the smocked
hem line detail. Join her for two days and learn how to transform an ordinary
square yoke dress into an enchanted smocked garden. Some of the many topics
covered include tips for picture perfect geometrics, blocking & ribbon weaving,
smocking on flat fabric, cast-on poises, and the importance
of the garment skeleton. From the floating lace trimmed lining to the tiniest
French seams, this little toddler confection is just as sweet inside as out.
Students may complete the smocking and floral embroidery in pastels or
understated white, either way this sweet little dress will be simply enchanting!
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25
It’s All In The Gathers
SKILL LEVEL: ALL
Do you have trouble controlling gathers or applying a piped yoke to smocking?
Are you looking for a gathered seam finish that isn't bulky or an easier way to
insert sleeves? Do you long to create a truly exquisite gown with a lace
insertion trimmed yoke, but have no idea how to attach a gathered skirt to sheer
lace? If so, 6 hours spent playing with gathers may just be the answer to your
prayers and might even change the way you sew forever. In this one day notebook
class designer Debbie Glenn
shares many of the unique heirloom techniques
she's developed for Sew Beautiful magazine.
Students learn her 7 steps to perfect gathers, how to make mock stroke gathers,
her wonderfully flat wrapped French seam, plus several lace applications
including corded pin stitched insertion, and much more..."gathering" a
construction notebook filled of valuable reference samples.
